CLO3D Modular Design Proposal

Transformable clothing that consists of modular design components are made up of detachable pieces to form a whole. Construction methods must allow for efficient removal, customizability and upgradeability.

Given the challenges the industry faces with garment disposability, designers must consider the physical and emotional durability of their designs. Consumers, playing a role in the garment creation process is a way to improve their relationship with their clothing. I’m exploring shoppers’ and professionals’ perceptions of modular fashion through a qualitative study leveraging technology.

I proposed an alternative habit and method of clothes shopping; one that requires a shift in perspectives in order to be realized and successful.

Approach

Qualitative research approach was threefold; involving (1) a survey on potential shoppers’ personal perspectives on clothes shopping and their understanding of, or interest in, modular garments, (2) fashion industry stakeholder interviews and (3) usability tests with prospective shoppers meeting an interest criteria for a climate conscious modular experience.

Among the modular designs I propose digitally and the simulated shopping user experience itself — the final result was a research informed paper and a physical modular garment based on what the majority of ‘potential shoppers’ want.

We examined hot and cold recipes’ textural reactions with activated charcoal, kombucha, wool and foam. Waterproofing techniques included use of aliginate and agar agar. Bio-based textiles can help us reach sustainability goals, and make use of precious waste products, regenerating them into new life.

While research continues to future-proof bio material’s viability for mass production, there are clear benefits to leveraging alternatives to leather and plastic in fashion design. I’m excited to continue exploring the possibilities!

Process

3D Fashion design

Leverage CLO to prototype digitally, decreasing the transit and waste associated with physical prototype renderings for early stage design concepts.

From digital to physical

Leverage Rhino and Grasshopper to apply parameters befitting 3D printing processes. Create pattern abstractions and comps based on algorithmic experimentation.

Textile application

Research on textile applications for collections that are sourced and produced with minimal waste. Strategize on best use of dyes and finishings that take agriculture and collaborators into account. Apply minimal waste pattern making practices.

Process analysis

Qualitative research on production processes to uncover efficiency gains. Understand the user archetypes within an ecosystem, applying a
human-centered design approach to interfaces, supply chain flows and production pipelines.
